History of the Paralympic Council of Ireland The Paralympic Council of Ireland (PCI) was founded in 1987, initially as a Coordination Committee for the Seoul Paralympics in 1988 and later to become the national representative organisation for sanctioned events of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) to include:
All administrative components relating to Paralympic Games, various World and European Championships are dealt with through PCI Secretariat. Our Mission: To promote, facilitate, develop and organise High Performance Athletes participating in European, World and Paralympic Events." Performance Remit: The PCI moved from a purely coordinating remit to a performance development remit in 2003 in line with the recommendations of the Sydney Review Report into the preparation and performance of the Irish Olympic Team for the 2000 Sydney Games. The PCI appointed the first "performance" position within the organisation with the appointment of the Paralympic Technical Director in January 2003 (This position later changed to Paralympic Performance Director). Through this position, the PCI develops annual Performance Plans with Games eligible sports in Ireland and liaises with the Irish Sports Council on all aspects of the preparation of the Irish Team for Paralympic Games including the provision of sport specific and Multisport Training camps both nationally and internationally. |
